THE HUMAN FOSSIL RECORD, VOLUME 4: CRANIODENTAL MORPHOLOGY OF EARLY HOMINIDS (Genera Australopithecus, Paranthropus, Orrorin) AND OVERVIEW

By Jeffrey H. Schwartz and Ian Tattersall
John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

FROM THE PUBLISHER
The Human Fossil Record series is the most authoritative and comprehensive
documentation of the fossil evidence relevant to the study of our
evolutionary past. Incorporating new photographs taken exclusively for the
series, it provides a compendium of detailed descriptions and illustrations
of fossils from all the major fossil sites.

The latest volume in this highly acclaimed four-volume series, covers the
craniodental remains of early hominids of the genera Australopithecus,
Paranthropus, Orrorin; presents a concluding survey of hominid craniodental
morphologies; and focuses on the documentation of morphology, the essential
basis for all further analysis of human biological history.

As with the other three volumes in this monumental and groundbreaking
series, the authors; use clearly defined terminology and descriptive
protocols that are uniformly applied throughout the text. Organized
alphabetically by site name, with detailed morphological descriptions and
original, expertly composed photographs, each entry features morphology,
location information, history of discovery, previous systematic assessment
of the fossils, geological, archaeological, and faunal contexts, dating, and
references to the primary literature.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Jeffrey H. Schwartz, Ph.D., and lan Tattersall, Ph.D., have together
published nearly 400 articles and 20 books on various aspects of primate,
including human, evolution. In addition, they have published extensively on
topics in evolutionary theory, with Dr. Schwartz focusing on development and
the origin of evolutionary novelty, and Dr. Tattersall specializing in
species recognition. Dr. Schwartz has also been involved in the recovery and
analysis of human and animal skeletal remains on archaeological sites, while
Dr. Tattersall has studied femur behavior and ecology. Collaborating since
1972 on projects dealing with the evolutionary relationships of living and
fossil femurs, they have been pursuing their current study of the human
fossil record since 1994, traveling the world to gain photographs and
details of every specimen possible. Dr. Schwartz's latest book is Sudden
Origins: Fossils, Genes, and the Emergence of Species, while Dr. Tattersall
recently published The Monkey in the Mirror: Essays on the Science of
Becoming Human (Harcourt). They also recently coauthored Extinct Humans
(Westview).
