Circulation Policy

Materials contained in the Barker Archives do not circulate. Materials must be used in the Archives Reading Room or in the Primate Center Library. Materials may not be removed from the premises for copying.

Collection Development Policy

Statement of Purpose:

The Archive seeks to document the history and development of the field of Primatology. Because of the cross-disciplinary nature of the field, researchers and scientists represented in the archive may come from a variety of backgrounds. Indeed, to truly represent the nature and scope of Primatology it is important to collects materials that will characterize the field in the broadest terms possible.

Materials within the scope of the Barker Archives include:

Acquisitions:

Material will be acquired primarily through donation although purchase and/or on-loan arrangements may be considered. The archives actively solicit for and encourage donations of material that fit within the scope of the collection. The decision to select and preserve material of historical value is the responsibility of the Library Director. Donations must be represented on a Deed of Gift form that is signed by the donor and the Library Director. Material outside the scope or that carry stringent donor restrictions may not be accepted.

The June Northrop Barker Archives does not serve as a records management and storage facility for the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center or the University of Wisconsin-Madison .

Access:

The June Northrop Barker Archives at the National Primate Research Center , University of Wisconsin-Madison are open by appointment to researchers, students and interested members of the community. Proper identification is required.

The use of certain manuscripts and records may be restricted by donors. For the protection of the collections, the archive also reserves the right to restrict unprocessed records and fragile materials. The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming to laws of libel, privacy, and copyright, which may be involved in the use of manuscripts and other materials.

Deaccessioning:

Duplicates and material outside the scope of the Barker Archives may be deaccessioned, subject to the terms of acquisitions and other applicable University policies, state and federal laws. These materials may be offered to other more appropriate institutions or the donor or donor's family.

Photocopying Policy

All photocopies must be made by archives or library staff. Researchers must fill out a photocopy request form and flag materials that they wish to have copied. Photocopies cost $0.25 per page. Researchers are limited to 50 items per week. Certain fragile items may not be photocopied.

Photograph Reproduction

Reprints or digital scans of photographs in the collection can be made for research, educational or exhibition purposes. Please check with Barker Archives or WNPRC Library staff for more information. Copyright may apply.
