In 1986, the Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) was established in the National Agricultural Library (NAL) to house and disseminate information of the care and welfare of experimental animals. Through its collection of 2 million volumes, 26,000 journal titles, and a collection of audiovisual materials, AWIC's mission is to reduce, refine and replace the use of animals in scientific experimentation. NAL also distributes specialized bibliographies, and maintains an on-line database of agricultural citations called AGRICOLA.
